Zero Budget Horizontal Community

Aim

  1. The creative potential and energy within each individual, once freed, needs expression and appropriate channelization into various immediately/directly useful activities. Proposed community envisages to provide the environment conducive to this freedom and channelization. These activities will be primarily human skill and labor based.
  2. One of the main causes for our ailments is 'under optimal labor'. We are made by nature to exert our bodies and when we do not exercise our faculties then all sorts of health problems arise.
  3. By remaining physically busy in productive work all persons get equal opportunity to evolve to their own optimum potential (physical, skills, intellectual and spiritual). At the same time the community also attains self sufficiency in terms of food, shelter, cleaning and other essential items/services.
  4. We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been — a place half-remembered and half-envisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free. Ch. 6 : Building Community : Processes for Groups, p. 92 - Starhawk http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Starhawk.
  5. Much of our magic and our community work is about creating spaces of refuge from a harsh and often hostile world, safe places where people can heal and regenerate, renew our energies and learn new skills. In that work, we try to release guilt, rage, and frustration, and generally turn them into positive emotions. Safety and refuge and healing are important aspects of spiritual community. But they are not the whole of spirituality. - Starhawk http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Starhawk.

  5. We learn and will continue to learn from other Tribals.

Time sharing

  1. If deemed feasible within horizontal framework we will facilitate participation of community as Resort and Retreat etc.
  2. These are to be carefully examined in detail on case specific basis.
  3. Only those people are to be considered who have definite/concrete horizontal leanings.
  4. Pure verticals will never be entertained.

Smooth transition to off-the-grid community

  1. Purchasing land is costly affair and will also make us static. Land can be on lease for farming experiment. Another way could be to be like Banjaras or wandering community, with a typical stop over time about an year.
  2. People can contribute average per capita Rs 50000. Per capita means, some people will contribute more and some less, so that the average per person is around Rs 50000 (Fifty Thousand only).
  3. So if 20 persons are there the project will be viable. While 150 (Dunbar's number) seems to be a higher limit on the community size, 20 seems to be the number to initiate a workable embryo community. This 20 is just an intuitive guess, so please feel free to suggest or improve upon this number through your personal participation!
  4. Our planning will be in a manner so that we do not need to spend the money living an artificial life based on market. This (Rs 50000) is just an estimated per capita amount (if the group size is minimum 20) so that we can be sustainable in immediate/near term and then progressively move away from market/money dependence for our basic survival and well being.
  5. We want to make an educated, self evolving smooth transition to off-the-grid independent community life.

Suggested minimum group size: 20

20 persons seems to ensure minimum group size for

  1. Threshold complexity for community dynamics
  2. Challenges
  3. Mutual support
  4. Sustainability

Different roles for people

Horizontal Community guidelines

  1. In case any member is behaving in extra special/humble/(attention seeking)talkative manner then that member will be requested to communicate only in writing that too on the community wall (notice board).
  2. Programs will be scheduled/planned in advance at least a day before.
  3. Kindly avoid one to one talk/interaction. Please write queries on wall and/or submit query/comment in writing on a chit during Q/A session only. Verbal queries will be ignored as they divert precious community consciousness on the person instead of the important query!
  4. All mobile phones to be switched off or remain away in silent mode during community sessions. Three separate times slots are provided for phone communication.
